Your flight to Tunis leaves soon and nobody's told you whether you need proof of onward travel. Fix that first. A dummy ticket, also called an onward ticket, is a real PNR booked for visa or border-check purposes without paying for the flight. Below, find the section that matches how much time you've got, then do what it says.
If you have a week or more
You've got room. Use it to check the rule, not to guess.
Entry conditions for Tunisia depend on your nationality. The UK government publishes guidance on its Tunisia entry requirements page, and most governments have an equivalent for their own citizens. Read the entry section. Look for any mention of onward or return travel.
Then call or message your airline. Ask one question: "Will you ask for proof of onward travel for my passport on this route?" Write down the answer and the date.
Action: if either source mentions onward proof, sort it out this week. Don't wait.
If you have a day or two
Time is short but workable. Skip the research and go straight to proof.
Airlines check what a destination expects using the IATA Timatic database, which IATA describes on its Timatic page. You can't search it yourself as a passenger, so assume the agent can see your answer on screen.
Get a verifiable reservation now. That means a real booking with a record locator you can look up on the airline's site. Check the name against your passport letter by letter. Check the date is in the future and fits your plans.
Action: book the proof today, then confirm it shows as active before you go to bed.
If you're at the check-in desk
Stay calm. Short sentences help here.
Hand over your passport. If the agent asks for onward travel, show the booking on your phone, the PDF and the reference. Let them verify it. A real PNR can be checked, and that's the whole point.
If the agent hesitates, ask: "Can you tell me what you need to see?" Then give exactly that. Don't argue about the rule. You won't win it at the desk.
Action: open your booking before you reach the front of the queue, so you're not scrolling while others wait.
If they've already refused you
Don't panic, and don't leave the desk yet.
First, find out why. Is it the onward proof, a passport issue, a name mismatch or something else? Ask for the reason in plain words. Second, ask whether a supervisor can look at it. Third, check how long until the flight closes, because that sets what's possible.
If the problem is missing proof and the counter is still open, a verifiable booking can sometimes fix it in minutes. If the booking you showed has lapsed, check whether it's expired. We cover that in what to do when an onward ticket expires before the flight.
Action: get the exact reason first. Then fix that one thing.
If your route isn't a straight flight
Connecting through another airport
Many routes to Tunis involve a change. That adds a checkpoint, because the agent at your first airport checks the whole journey, not just the first leg.
Ask yourself two things. Are your flights on one booking or two? And will you pass through immigration at the connecting airport? If the legs are separate, each airline may ask its own questions, and the second one won't know what the first one saw.
Carry the same proof for both. Keep the file open on your phone and keep the booking reference somewhere that doesn't need signal.
Action: treat every check-in desk on the route as the one that matters.
Leaving Tunisia by land
Tunisia has land borders with Algeria and Libya, and your real exit may not be a flight at all. That doesn't remove the airline's question on the way in. The agent at your departure airport sees your flight into Tunis and wants to know you'll be allowed to stay.
So carry a verifiable booking out of Tunisia even if you'll leave overland, and keep your honest plan ready for the officer. Our guide on whether you can check in with a dummy ticket explains how the two fit.
Action: carry the booking, and tell the officer your real route when asked.
Before your next trip. You'll be calmer if this is done early. Put the following in one folder on your phone:
- Passport photo page
- Onward booking PDF and reference
- First night's accommodation
- Official entry guidance for your passport
Check the booking again the day before you fly. Holds can lapse, and the airline can cancel unticketed reservations.
